Durham Community Land Trustees (DCLT) is excited to announce the recent acquisition of 1600 Anderson Street, a 48-unit property totaling 44,711 sq. feet in a neighborhood influenced by Duke University and its medical center. This significant purchase marks a crucial step in DCLT’s mission to address the affordable housing crisis in Durham by developing, advocating for, and managing sustainable housing solutions for low- to moderate-income residents. It reflects a dedication to restoring a time when homes in Durham were both affordable and accessible to its residents, embodying our commitment to Bringing Durham Home.
Along with the 48 units, the transaction includes an additional 2.28 acres located behind Lakewood Elementary School. DCLT plans to utilize this land to construct new townhomes that will be available to households earning 80% or below the Area Median Income (AMI), further contributing to affordable housing availability in the city.
This recent acquisition follows the groundbreaking of Guthrie Village, a supportive housing community designed by veterans for veterans in East Durham. This innovative project exemplifies DCLT’s ongoing commitment to meeting the diverse housing needs of the community, providing veterans with stable, affordable homes. The groundbreaking ceremony hosted a range of government officials, community partners, and supporters who stand behind DCLT’s efforts to bring affordable housing to those who need it most.
Founded in 1987 by neighborhood residents in response to escalating housing prices, absentee landlords, and housing disrepair, DCLT has grown to manage over 300 rental units, serving nearly 400 residents. By next week, the organization will welcome its 54th land trust homeowner. Through its land trust model, DCLT holds and manages land on behalf of the community, ensuring that housing remains permanently affordable and accessible for future generations.
DCLT invites the Durham community to support its ongoing efforts of Bringing Durham Home, including the transformative Guthrie Village project and the new developments on Anderson Street. Through continued collaboration and strong community backing, DCLT is poised to create lasting change in Durham’s affordable housing landscape.
