Welcome to the Durham Community Land Trustees (DCLT), where we're dedicated to developing, managing, and advocating for permanently affordable, sustainable and ADA accessible housing. Our mission is to provide stability for individuals and families with low to moderate incomes in Durham, North Carolina.
Established in 1987 by West End community residents, DCLT has already stabilized and revitalized 370 units of affordable homeownership and rental housing, benefiting over 1,000 low-and moderate-income families. We prioritize economically and racially diverse communities near essential Durham-based jobs, schools, and amenities.
Our projects emphasize access to green space and fostering a healthy, sustainable environment. At DCLT, we understand that homeownership offers generational dividends, including comfort, stability, and pride. We believe that support, education, and opportunity are the keys to turning hope into reality.
“What sets DCLT apart from other housing organizations is that when you invest with the land trust it is a permanent investment into housing for the community. There is no sunset on our mission of sustaining housing affordability for generations to come.”
– Sherry Taylor, Executive Director, DCLT

Regardless of whether individuals choose to buy or rent, DCLT is North Carolina's innovative solution to the pressing issues of access to affordable housing. Now, more than ever, DCLT is essential for tackling issues affecting accessibility and affordability such as these:
-
Soaring housing and rental costs outpace stagnant incomes.
-
Limited accessible and affordable properties following the COVID-era surge in home purchases.
-
Discriminatory policies perpetuate disparities, disproportionately affecting people of color.
-
Escalating purchase prices driven by gentrification and accrued equity.
-
Insufficient household incomes to cover housing expenses.

30%
(40,385 households) of Durham County are cost-burdened.

46%
(26,865 households) of renters have difficulty affording their homes

18%
(13,520 households) of homeowners have difficulty affording their homes

Before purchasing a home through DCLT, Gloria faced long commutes and missed family time. Now, living close to her workplace, she enjoys a better work-life balance, with more time for her family and community.
For all these reasons, there is a clear need for increased avenues to affordable and workforce housing at the local level, especially for lower income individuals and families.
